Samsung today unveiled its next-generation Exynos chipset that will power the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+: the Exynos 9810. The octa-core chip is based on Samsung’s second generation 10nm fabrication process and features third-generation of its own custom cores that can reach speeds of up to 2.9GHz.

Samsung says that the single-core performance on the Exynos 9810 is up “two-fold” while multi-core performance sees a 40 percent performance improvement compared to its predecessor. The mobile chip also features neural network-based deep learning and strong security measures. These enhancements allow the chip to scan a user’s face in 3D for hybrid face detection using a combination of both hardware and software. The processor is coupled with an industry first 1.2Gbps LTE modem which offers up to 1.2Gbps downlink speeds and 200Mbps uplink. It also has support for 4×4 MIMO, eLAA, and 256-QAM.

“The Exynos 9 Series 9810 is our most innovative mobile processor yet, with our third-generation custom CPU, ultra-fast gigabit LTE modem and, deep learning-enhanced image processing,” said Ben Hur, vice president of System LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics. “The Exynos 9810 will be a key catalyst for innovation in smart platforms such as smartphones, personal computing and automotive for the coming AI era.”

The Exynos 9810 also features an upgraded ISP and MFC (Multi-Format Codec) which is faster and more energy efficient. This will allow the process to provide “advanced stabilization” for up to UHD resolution videos, brighter pictures in low-light with reduced noise, and real-time out-of-focus photography. The upgraded MFC enables the chip to record and playback UHD videos at up to 120fps. It also has support for 10-bit HEVC and VP9.

The Exynos 9810 chip is currently in mass production and will make its debut inside Samsung’s upcoming flagship: the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus. This chip will be found inside the international variant of the handsets, while the U.S. variants will continue to make use of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chip. It will be interesting to see how Samsung’s chip compares to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 in terms of performance and power efficiency.
