Last month there was a rumor going around saying Samsung was interested in purchasing the German OLED company Novaled for $200 million. Late Friday night, the deal was officially announced, and for quite a bit more money: $347 million. Who exactly is Novaled? Besides holding over 500 patents for OLED technology, they appear to be the type of company that has a strong R&D department that then licenses out their fabrication techniques. What is Samsung going to do with this company? Besides use their patents to bat LG over the head, Samsung will also likely advance their own OLED manufacturing capabilities.
