When Samsung opened an R&D center here in Finland, right next to Nokia’s offices no less, people knew the Korean electronics giant wanted to soak up any and all of the locally available talent. Now it’s time for Canada to get a big old giant hug from Samsung. According to a Samsung Electronics’ press release, the company’s new R&D office will be focused on “enterprise security solutions, while also providing global technical support for the company’s diverse B2B customers.”

Translation: We’re taking all your smart employees, BlackBerry.

Why would Samsung event want BlackBerry’s old employees? Because the high end smartphone market is quickly becoming saturated and there are two big cash cows left. One of them is “the next billion”, otherwise known as the high volume and low margin game. The other is the enterprise sector. Companies that have to manage the devices of thousands, maybe even tens of thousands, of employees like to go to one company that can handle all their needs. And unlike BlackBerry, Samsung also sells desktops, laptops, severs, the power generators to put in data centers, and the list just goes on and on.

How big is this new R&D facility anyway? Right now there are 60 people working there, but that number is expected to grow. Samsung wants to emphasize that they have over 67,000 people in some of sort research role, and that number is only going to get bigger.
