Kicking off IFA, Samsung today announced its new Gear smartwatch: the Gear Sport. As the name indicates, the company’s latest Gear smartwatch is aimed at athletes and fitness enthusiasts.
The smartwatch features a dual-core 1GHz processor, 768MB of RAM, and 4GB of storage. There is also a 1.2-inch 360 x 360 AMOLED circular display protected by Gorilla Glass 3 inside an 11.6mm thick body. Other specs of the wearable include Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth, NFC, heart rate scanner, and GPS. All this is powered by a 300mAh battery which can power the device for over 4 days of average use.
In terms of functionality, the Gear Sport can record your swimming sessions using the pre-loaded Speedo app — the wearable itself is rated to be waterproof in up to 50m depth of water. Samsung has also partnered with Under Armour to offer free 12-month of membership to its suite of fitness apps which include MyFitnessPal, MapMyRun, Endomondo, and UA Record.
Like with previous Gear smartwatches, the Gear Sport runs on Tizen. This means that your selection of apps and watch faces will be limited, but they should still be good enough for basic use. Oh, there’s Bixby on the watch as well.
Samsung will be offering the Gear Sport in black or blue silicone strap. The smartwatch is compatible with both Android and iOS devices. For now, Samsung has not mentioned anything about the pricing and availability of the Gear Sport.
