Right now Chrome OS is a standalone product, one of the last areas that hasn’t been wrapped up into Android. But that could be changing soon.

According to a report published by The Wall Street Journal, Google has intentions of rolling Chrome OS into Android at some point in the future. The report goes further and says that engineers inside Google have been working on the project for a couple of years now, and that a major leap in progress has been made recently. As a result, Google could be gearing up to show off the new combined operating system in the early stretch of 2016, with a target release date penciled in for 2017.

The end result is pretty obvious: Android on PCs, and, by extension, on even more devices. The report states that if this does indeed pan out, then the computers running Android would have access to Google Play, too. This would help developers get their apps on even more devices, too.
