Samsung Galaxy S7 reportedly won’t be getting a major design upgrade

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge changed the way consumers look at Samsung’s flagship smartphones, with the company replacing its cheap-feeling plastics with metal and glass for a considerably more premium feel. But barring the curved edges on the Galaxy S6 edge (and the Galaxy S6 edge+), Samsung’s 2015 flagships continue to have the same overall look as existing Galaxy devices, and a new report suggests that will continue to be the case with the upcoming Galaxy S7

According to the Korea Times, Samsung is unlikely to spend resources on a “surface overhaul” at a time when it is already suffering from low margins on handsets. The Korean giant will reportedly be focusing on improving picture quality, performance and “some new features” through the use of newer processors, DRAMs and storage technologies. However, all that goes without saying, since these improvements are something every manufacturer works on for every new handset, regardless of how their previous devices have done on the market.

The report also suggests Samsung won’t be holding a dedicated Unpacked event for the launch of the Galaxy S7, another move that might be targeted at reducing unnecessary expenditures. In any case, the suggestion that the overall design will remain the same is an unsurprising one, and if an Edge version accompanies the Galaxy S7 next year, no one is likely to complain about Samsung sticking to the same design language for yet another year.
