Open betas are meant to give the general public a chance to try out prerelease software, and also a way for a company to test that software ahead of an actual public launch.

And while those beta seeds can go pretty well, with a few bumps in the road along the way, they can also go very wrong. That appears to be the case with the latest open beta for OxygenOS, as OnePlus has pulled the latest open beta due to a critical bug that can brick some units out in the wild. Some OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T owners out there have reported soft bricking problems after installing the open beta.

As a result of the issue, OnePlus is pulling the open beta for the OnePlus 5/5T. It is also removing the beta for OnePlus’s newer handsets, the OnePlus 6 and 6T, as well. OnePlus says “a new OTA will be available soon”, but doesn’t provide much detail beyond that. This shouldn’t be a major dealbreaker for OnePlus, or for people who want to try out prerelease software. After all, these types of issues can happen. If OnePlus hadn’t beta tested the update, then this could have happened to a lot more devices with a public launch. It’s always annoying when it happens, but that’s why it’s advised not to try out this type of early software on a daily driver.
