Huawei had a plan to launch on a wireless carrier in the United States this year, but that didn’t pan out.

And now it looks like OnePlus is on the path to maybe getting its phones on U.S. carriers. The company’s CEO, Pete Lau, has confirmed that talks with wireless carriers will begin sometime this year. That doesn’t necessarily mean that anything will come of it, but, as it stands, it’s one step of many that could possibly see at least OnePlus-branded smartphone appear on store shelves of a wireless carrier in the U.S.

Here’s what Lau had to say on it:

“If the right opportunity and timing come along, we’ll be very happy to experiment.”

The OnePlus brand has proven itself over the years, becoming one of the go-to companies when talking about offering a high-profile, oftentimes top-tier smartphone without aiming to break the bank of its customers. The brand is certainly noteworthy across the globe already, but to make a heavy dent in the United States market a wireless carrier deal is basically a requirement.

The fact that OnePlus is moving that way is a pretty exciting shift. One has to hope that it works out better for them than it did for Huawei.
