Depending on the different payment methods you have stored in your Google Account, there were different ways to pay for things across the online marketplace and in physical retail stores, including in the Play Store proper on Android devices.

But Google saw an opportunity to bridge that gap and combine into one service. So, beginning today and moving forward into the future, the likes of Android Pay and Google Wallet are being folded into one service, and will be available under one brand: Google Pay. Google made the announcement today, confirming that some retailers are already supporting the new brand right now, with plenty more to come.

This isn’t a new service by default, one that users will have to adopt independently of Android Pay or Google Wallet. No, Google Pay is simply the new branding, where those services will be available. Basically, Android Pay and Google Wallet are now Google Pay, and it will let you use the saved payment methods you have in your Google Account in one service from this point on.

“With Google Pay, it’ll be easier for you to use the payment information saved to your Google Account, so you can speed through checkout with peace of mind. Over the coming weeks, you’ll see Google Pay online, in store, and across Google products, as well as when you’re paying friends.”

As it stands right now, companies like Airbnb, Dice, Fandango, Instacart, HungryHouse, and others already support Google Pay, and more are on the way. As mentioned above, the service works online, in physical retail stores, and on websites directly where supported.

Bringing everything under one brand should make it easier to pay for things across services and platforms. We’ll all just have to pour one out for Android Pay’s branding moving forward.
