Ivy Ross, the head of the Made by Google team, was interviewed by the editor of the Google blog for their ‘The She Word is a Keyword’ series. While the interview is an interesting read in its own right, it also provides us with a glimpse at some of the prototype Pixel 2 units.

One of the photos in the interview show the various iterations of the Pixel 2 that Google went through before it finalized on the final version of the device. As the photo shows, some Pixel 2 variants had squarish edges, with the camera being placed right at the very end of the top left edge. The LaserAF sensor and LED flash were then arranged accordingly.

Looking closely, one can also see the different front that Google tried before deciding on the final variant.

Another image gives us a look at the Pixelbook iterations, some of which involved a two-tone design similar to the Pixel 2 albeit with different colors. Another picture shows the Google team meeting to decide on a fabric for the Google Home Mini.

It is very rare for companies to reveal the various prototypes that they went through before deciding on the final variant of a device. While we will never know Google’s reasoning for ditching the different iterations of the Pixel 2 shown in the photo, we now at least know how they looked like.
