Google is reportedly unifying its teams working on YouTube Music and Google Play Music. The move is unlikely to have any immediate impact, but in the long run, the unified team is expected to merge the two apps into one as well.

Google had already merged the business team of both apps last year into one. This allowed the company to negotiate better deals with labels and artists on getting their music up on its platform. A Google spokesperson also confirmed the merger of the two teams to The Verge. 

“Music is very important to Google and we’re evaluating how to bring together our music offerings to deliver the best possible product for our users, music partners and artists. Nothing will change for users today and we’ll provide plenty of notice before any changes are made.”

By offering a single app eventually for music, Google will be able to offer better value to its users with a more extensive library. Considering how competitive the music streaming service is getting, this move will help Google in better competing with other streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music.
