Earlier this week I covered a rumor out of Vietnam that said Samsung was going to announce a phone called the Galaxy Win. That’s such an awkward name that I thought it might be a mistake, but nope, the phone just appeared on Samsung’s Chinese website.

The Win, also known as the GT-I8552, has a 4.7 inch 800 x 480 pixel display, an unnamed quad core 1.2 GHz processor, which the leak said was a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200, 5 megapixel camera, and a 2,000 mAh battery. It supports quadband GSM/EDGE and dualband (900/2100 MHz) 3G, though Samsung doesn’t specify how fast the 3G goes.

Will this thing ever land outside the People’s Republic? I hope it doesn’t, because the world doesn’t need a 4.7 inch Galaxy S III variant with such a low resolution screen. The only reason someone would probably be interested in buying the Win is because it looks so much like the Galaxy S III. In other words, they can’t afford the “real” GS3, so they get the Win instead.

That’s not what I’d call winning.

If I had to buy a budget smartphone today, it would probably be the Galaxy S III Mini. It’s basically a 4 inch Galaxy S II, and you just know it’s going to be supported for at least a year or two. It’s selling for roughly 250 EUR in Europe right now, and I’ve seen it in Malaysia and Thailand for roughly the same price.
