Samsung launched a smartphone at the very end of 2012 called the Galaxy Grand. The best way to think of it is a 5 inch Galaxy S III with the guts of a Samsung Galaxy S II. In other words, 5 inch 800 x 480 pixel resolution screen, dual core 1.2 GHz processor (ARM Cortex A9), and an 8 megapixel camera. All that in a body that looks a lot like Samsung’s 2012 flagship smartphone.
Samsung being Samsung, they just had to create a variant of the Grand, which brings me to today’s device: the Galaxy Grand Quattro. As the name suggests, there’s now a quad core processor under the hood. Don’t be fooled though, it’s not four ARM Cortex A9 cores. Nope, it’s four ARM Cortex A5 cores. Qualcomm brands the chip as the Snapdragon 200, and I’m incredibly curious to see how it benches since it’s totally new.
How else does the Quattro differ from the original Grand? The camera gets bumped down to 5 megapixels, and that’s it as far as I can tell. When does it come out? I have no idea, but it looks like it’s going to be available in India first, and then other markets will (hopefully) follow. It should cost a hair over $300.
Update: My mistake, it looks like this device has a 4.7 inch screen, meaning it’s a variant of the Galaxy Win, but then that wouldn’t explain the name of the device, so … I’m confused.
