Rick Osterloh, who recently left Lenovo as a part of its mobile restructuring business, is now back at Google. The executive became the president of Motorola once Dennis Woodside left the company during Google’s acquisition. After Google sold Motorola to Lenovo, Rick helped in the transition, but left the company once it was completed. 

At Google, Osterloh will be heading a new division that will unify all of Google’s hardware efforts across various categories. Hired as the Senior Vice President, Osterloh will be directly reporting to Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai.

Under this new division, Osterloh will be overseeing hardware development of Google’s Nexus lineup of smartphones. He will also help in fostering partnerships with OEMs, and for this, he will work closely with Android’s SVP Hiroshi Lockheimer, who will now focus more on software development. Other departments that Osterloh will see include Chromecast; Consumer hardware, which includes Chromebooks; OnHub — Google’s wireless home router; ATAP — Project Ara and other modular projects from Google come under this division; and lastly, Glass. Tony Fadell was heading the Glass division until now, but he will now act as an “adviser.”

This is the broadest role that Rick Osterloh has ever taken on, but if his past record is anything to go by, he is going to do a fabulous job. If anything, Google’s hardware division just became more interesting now that Osterloh is at the helm.
