Signing up for Project Fi, Google’s MVNO service, meant customers needed to have access to a consumer Google account.

But today, Google has removed one of the major restrictions for the MVNO, announcing that G Suite accounts can now be used to sign up for service. That means if a customer has paid for the custom domain name and service, they will now be able to sign up for Project Fi without also having to create a standard, consumer-level Gmail account.

There might be some issues with folks who have already created a standard Gmail account, and now have to work out how to switch over their account, but this is mainly a move to make it easier for new customers to sign up for the MVNO service. The move to incorporate G Suite accounts is a long-time coming and certainly makes sense, especially for businesses, especially with Project Fi’s group plans.

G Suite accounts are officially supported by Project Fi beginning today. However, if you are not the administrator of your G Suite account, you’ll need to get them to turn on Project Fi access manually. The option is not activated by default, so keep that in mind. If you can’t get Project Fi turned on for the G Suite account, you’ll still need to create a customer-grade Gmail account to sign up for service.

Project Fi has turned into a strong product for Google, and finally allowing G Suite account access should help it out even more.
