Pro Tip: If you want to keep a secret, don’t use the internet. Nando Monterazo, one of Nintendo’s many engineers, recently took to Twitter to tell the world that he’s working on an Android based tablet. He didn’t go into any further detail, but he did say that said tablet will have educational games for children that use the famous Nintendo characters we all grew up on.

Let’s break this down.

Why is Nintendo working on a tablet, specifically one that runs Android? Probably because they realize that there’s a market opportunity that they’re currently ignoring with the 3DS and Wii U, both of which are difficult to program for and require Nintendo’s stamp of approval in order to sell applications. Android kills two birds with one stone. It’s easy to program for and the distribution platform is built-in.

Will Nintendo’s tablet come with the Google Play Store? I highly doubt it. Nintendo takes control very seriously. They want to own the entire stack, and the last they want to see happen is for a child to search the Play Store for some obscene term and then install an app with graphic content.

When will this tablet come out? Hardware platforms usually get launched at either the Electronic Entertainment Expo, better known as E3, or the Tokyo Game Show. The former takes place next year between June 10th and June 12th, while the latter starts on September 18th and runs until the 21st. If I was a betting man, I’d put money down on an event in Tokyo, because building a tablet is one thing, perfecting the games for said tablet is another thing altogether.
