The Moto G series of handsets have played an important role in Motorola’s history. The original Moto G single-handedly brought the company back from the dead, with future Moto G handsets playing a key role in keeping the company afloat and competitive in the smartphone market.

So, exactly how many Moto G units has Motorola shipped over the years? As per the company’s Sergio Buniac, that number is over 70 million. The Moto G series has been on sale for over 5 years so this translates into 12 million phones sold every year. Despite its popularity, the original Moto G is unlikely to have sold more than a few million units. The Moto G2 also met with lukewarm response. So, its the last three Moto G handsets that have probably sold a lot.

Motorola expects the Moto G6 series to sell at least 30 million units thereby taking the total sales tally of the series to over 100 million units.

Let’s not forget that Motorola also has its Moto E and Moto Z series of handsets. The former has worked particularly well in developing and budget-conscious markets, while the Moto Z series has met with limited success in the United States.

Motorola has lost market share in India where it once dominated the market along with Lenovo. On the flip side though, the company has gained momentum in Latin America where it is among the top two smartphone OEMs. In the United States, Motorola is the number 1 unlocked smartphone brand.

The Moto G6 Plus is already on sale in Brazil and other Latin American countries, with the series making its debut across the world in the coming months.
