Google is reportedly looking to set up a flagship retail store in Chicago’s flagship Fulton Market district. The company is on the verge of finalizing a lease for 14,000 sq. feet of retail space on the first and second floor of multiple connected two-story brick buildings between 845 and 853W in Randolph Street.

Despite venturing into the consumer hardware space, Google has no official retail stores of its own. The company does run some pop-up stores inside retail stores of Best Buy, but it does not have its own retail space like Apple, Microsoft, and Samsung. If Google goes ahead with this lease agreement, this might change for good.

If Google does end up opening its retail store at the said location, it would be located just two blocks away from the company’s headquarters in Chicago. The company was reportedly looking to expand its office space in the area by over 100,000 square feet.

The flagship retail store from Google will be used to showcase the bevy of consumer hardware products that it sells like the Google Home series of speakers, Nest thermostats and security cams, Pixel series of devices, Chromebooks, and more. The move will allow consumers to experience and feel such products from Google before splurging money on them. Despite the increase in sales of electronic products through online channels, consumers still tend to prefer experiencing a phone in retail life before pulling the trigger on it.

There’s no confirmation from Google’s part yet that it is indeed working on opening its first retail store in Chicago so this is pure speculation at this point. This is not the first time we have heard rumors about Google working on opening its own retail stores so it is better to take this news with a pinch of salt unless there are more concrete leaks and proofs.
