The Google Pixel has had a less than perfect launch, with the handset being plagued with various hardware issues since its retail availability. Almost six months after its launch, a new issue seems to have cropped up on the device: defective microphones.

Many Google Pixel owners have been complaining about the microphone of their device not working properly. Some report about the microphone not working properly while using recording apps while others complain about their voice being inaudible to the other party while on a call.

Google has officially acknowledged the issue and says that it is indeed a hardware issue affecting less than 1% of the Pixel devices out there. More specifically, the problem is only on units that were manufactured in January or before.

The issue stems from a hairline crack in the solder connection on the audio codec that can lead to the microphone not working properly or other issues with audio processing. The problem only seems to crop up temporarily since it is affected by the way one holds their phone and even temperature changes.

Google says that the problem can suddenly occur a few months after owning the phone due to a drop, even though the drop might not have specifically caused any external damage to the phone.

If you have been facing microphone issues on your Google Pixel, Google recommends that you get a replacement unit.
