Fly Labs, the developer behind popular video editing apps like Tempo, Fly and Crop, today announced that they have been acquired by Google.
The term of the acquisition remain unknown, but the Fly Labs team will be working with the Google Photos team. Their expertise in building video editing apps will be used by the Google Photos team to bring in-app video editing tools to the app, which currently only features basic photo editing tools.
We’re excited to continue on our mission by joining Google and the Google Photos team in Mountain View, California. Google Photos is a home for your life’s memories, powered by Google’s machine learning and computer vision technology. It’s a perfect match for what we built at Fly Labs, and we’re looking forward to folding our technology into Google Photos. We’ll be pouring the same passion into Google Photos that we poured into Clips, Fly, Tempo and Crop on the Fly.
As for the three iOS apps from Fly Labs, they will be available for download for the next three months. The apps have been made completely free to use with all IAPs removed as well. After 3 months though, the app will be removed from the App Store and iOS users will be unable to download it after that.
Google Photos is easily one of the best services to be released by Google in recent times. After years of storing my photos on Dropbox and the startup doing essentially nothing with them, it is refreshing to see my uploaded photos being converted into memories by Google without any intervention from me. By adding in-app video editing tools to Google Photos, Google will only be further improving the experience of using the service.
