According to Google, 2013 was a pretty good year for mobile technology. So good that technology related products like the Galaxy S4 were among the most searched for terms on Google during 2013.Not surprisingly, the top mobile technology terms were “iPhone 5s” and “Samsung Galaxy S4,” which ranked #3, and #8, respectively, in Google’s annual Zeitgeist list. Zeitgeist means “spirit of the times,” and the list is Google’s way of reflecting on the previous year by analyzing popular and trending search terms. Using search as a cultural indicator makes sense — if people are talking about it and it’s important, then they are also searching for it.
This is an impressive showing for both Android and iOS as Zeitgeist includes all search categories, not just technology. The complete top ten search terms for all of 2013 include Nelson Mandela, Paul Walker, iPhone 5s, Cory Monteith, Harlem Shake, Boston Marathon, Royal Baby, Samsung Galaxy S4, PlayStation 4 and North Korea. Other notable Android entries include the Nexus 5 at #21, the HTC One at #55 and the Galaxy Note 3 at #92.
On the mobile phone search list, the iPhone 5s took top spot, while Android dominated the rest of the list with Google’s mobile OS accounting for five out of the top ten most searched for phones. The top ten includes the iPhone 5s, Samsung Galaxy S4, iPhone 5c, HTC One, Nexus 5, BlackBerry 10, Moto X, LG G2 and the Nokia Lumia 1020.
Besides its trending list, Google released a video that summarizes the year in short, but memorable clips. There’s also an interactive map that shows the top five searches in different geographic areas across the world.
