In 2014, Google’s Cardboard turned out to be a very successful experiment for the company. For less than $5, Google Cardboard turned out to be a great way for many people to experience VR for the first time.

Now, according to a report from The Financial Times, Google is planing on now greatly stepping up its virtual reality offering. The company plans on releasing a new virtual reality headset that will be similar to Samsung’s Gear VR, which can be used in conjunction with a smartphone.

Google’s offering is also slated to come with “better sensors” and “lenses” to deliver a superior user experience. However, just like Samsung’s Gear VR, a smartphone will be required for doing all the processing work.

Google was rumored to work on an Android VR operating system, but since the initial leak in 2015, things have largely been silent on this front. It is likely that Google will announce more details about its new VR offering at Google I/O in May this year, with the hardware reportedly arriving sometime in September. Similar to its Nexus offerings, Google will have complete control over the design and final user experience of its upcoming VR product.

By adding VR support to Android itself, Google will allow developers to create VR-enabled apps and games.
