The fingerprint scanner on the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X have always felt a bit underutilised. Besides being used for unlocking the phone and verifying purchases on the Google Play Store, the fingerprint scanner could not be used for any other purpose in the OS.

Many Chinese OEMs use the fingerprint scanner for added features like being able to move around in the UI, taking a selfie, and more. Taking a cue from them, Google now seems to be enhancing the fingerprint sensor functionality on its upcoming Nexus devices. As Android Police reveals, a simple swipe down on the fingerprint scanner of the upcoming Nexus handsets can be used to quickly expand the notification shade. While this is not groundbreaking or earth shattering, it is still a nifty feature to have.

It remains unclear as of this moment if Google will be bringing this feature to the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P as well, or keep it exclusive to its new HTC-made Nexus handsets.

Android Police also confirms that Google will be offering the 2016 Nexus handsets in a new “Electric Blue” finish as shown in the GIF above. They also confirm that the home button in the navigation bar will be redesigned and will now animate on certain actions. The button will also be used to bring up Google Assistant, Google’s new virtual assistant.
