In a move that surprised absolutely no one, LG published a press release saying that the successor to the Optimus G will have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 under the hood. This has been rumored for as long as anyone on the internet can remember, which these days is three months.

So what exactly do we know about this next G? Several photos of it have leaked, and it looks like a cross between a GS4 and an Optimus G Pro. It’s said to sport a 5″ 1080p screen, and that’s it really.

What other devices will have the Snapdragon 800? Samsung’s Galaxy Note III, HTC’s One Max, a Korean only Galaxy S4, Sony’s upcoming 6.44 inch Xperia Z Ultra, the next Surface RT … I could go on and on, but I’ll stop.

Why did LG publish this press release? Because that’s just what they do. LG was the first company to announce a dual core smartphone, but were they the first to actually ship one? No. The same story repeated itself when the world moved to quad core.

Remember the Optimus 4X HD? It’s OK, no one does.
