According to market research firm UBI Research, Samsung will be using a 5.5-inch 4K display on the Galaxy S8, its flagship handset for 2017. The display will continue to be based on the company’s AMOLED technology.

The research firm notes that the improved production yield for 5.5-inch 4K AMOLED display in the coming months will allow Samsung to use the display in its handset next year.

Samsung has followed a two-year cycle for upgrading the screen resolution of its flagship Galaxy S devices. While the Galaxy S launched with a WVGA (480 x 800), the Galaxy S2 and Galaxy S3 featured a 720p resolution AMOLED display. The Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S5 followed it up with a Full HD resolution AMOLED display, while with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S7, Samsung made the jump to a Quad HD resolution display.

A 4K resolution display is going to be of little use in day-to-day usage, but it will greatly enhance the VR experience. When using the likes of the Galaxy S7 with Samsung’s Gear VR headset, the pixels on the display are clearly visible, which clearly signifies the need for a higher resolution display.

If Samsung does end up using a 4K display on the Galaxy S8, it will not be the first in the market to do so. Sony already launched the first display with a 4K display last year, dubbed the Xperia Z5 Premium. However, due to power usage concerns, the display only works at its native resolution while displaying photos and other media content in Sony’s stock gallery app. It will be interesting to see how Samsung manages to negate the increase in power consumption by switching to a 4K display on the Galaxy S8.
