Samsung has stepped up its game in the mid-range segment with its 2016 line-up of the Galaxy A series. The handsets feature a premium design and build quality that is akin to the company’s flagship Galaxy S6 and S7 series of handsets.

However, it looks like the Korean company is working on a completely new mid-range lineup, with the Galaxy C5 being the first to make its debut in that line-up. The handset leaked in flesh in plenty of pictures today that show it as having a metal build. The rear design of the handset, however, is its most puzzling aspect as it looks very similar to an HTC device — thanks to the huge camera module in the centre and antenna lines running at the top and bottom end.

It is unclear when Samsung plans on unveiling its new Galaxy C5 handset. The rumor mill points to the handset coming with 4GB RAM, a Snapdragon 615 or 617 chipset, a 16MP rear shooter, and an 8MP front shooter that puts it in the mid-to-high-end range.

With a barrage of new mid-range phones that offer excellent build quality, Samsung is likely looking to battle other Chinese OEMs that have been slowly eroding its market share in the low- to high-end smartphone market in China, India, and other parts of the world.

While impressive, the success of the company’s new handsets depend squarely on their pricing — an area that has traditionally been Samsung’s weak spot against its Chinese competitors.
