Over the many years that Nintendo has released home video game consoles, the company has used its own proprietary software to run the show. If a new report pans out, though, that could be changing in a big way soon.

Based on a report from Nikkei, and citing an unnamed “insider,” Nintendo is reportedly planning on using Android, Google’s mobile (but quickly expanding) operating system as the platform to run the next home console, which is codenamed NX. The report states that this is a move from Nintendo to get more developers on board with its console, something that the company has missed with the current generation Wii U.

As one might expect, if this is true then it would mean Nintendo will base its next video game console’s operating system on Android, and that it will be heavily skinned and modified. No one should be expecting a Nexus-like experience on the console.

Unfortunately, any further information is unknown at this point. What do you think of the rumor?
