2016 Moto X leak

It’s been awhile since Google sold Motorola to Lenovo, and Lenovo’s Motorola subsidiary just recently announced two new Moto G devices, but it looks like another shakeup of sorts is on the way.

According to a report from VentureBeat, and citing marketing materials obtained by the publication, the Moto X will no longer be the flagship brand for Motorola moving forward. Instead, if the documentation is correct, Motorola will be transitioning to the “Moto Z” brand, and with it launch a pair of new smartphones later this year.

Those smartphones were reportedly leaked not too long ago in press renders, which showed devices that offer a slight design change from previous Moto flagship devices. The new report echoes that Lenovo/Motorola will be launching a pair of flagships again this year, but the branding will be different.

This year, the new devices will be known as the Moto Z Play and the Moto Z Style. On top of that, the report also states that Verizon’s DROID lineup is getting a bit of a shift, too, and will actually hold onto the Moto Z branding this year, instead of adopting titles like “DROID Turbo” and “DROID Maxx.” Instead, the devices launched this year will reportedly be titled something akin to “Moto Z Play Droid Edition.”

A previous report suggested Motorola’s accessories for the Moto Z Play and Moto Z Style, which would attach via modular backplates, won’t actually be called Amps after all, but instead be known as MotoMods.

Lenovo is set to have an announcement on June 9, and it’s more than likely going to have the Moto X Play and Moto Z Style on hand, so we don’t have long to wait to see if this report pans out.
