At an event in New York today, Motorola and Verizon announced two new DROID devices: the Droid Turbo 2 and the Droid MAXX 2. The former is the company’s flagship Droid handset this year, and features a 5.4-inch POLED display that Motorola claims is “shatterproof.”

The company claims that it has worked on its Moto Shatter Shield technology for the last three years, which makes the display on the Droid Turbo 2 shatterproof. It is so confident of its technology that it is offering a 4-year guarantee against cracks and shatters for the display.

Design wise, the Droid Turbo 2 looks similar to the Moto X Pure Edition, though the bottom bezel seems to have grown in size.

Under the hood, the Droid Turbo 2 is powered by a Snapdragon 810 processor and comes with 3GB RAM. It also has 32/64GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, and a beefy 3,760mAh battery that is enough to power the handset for up to 48 hours. If that is not enough, the handset also supports turbo charging that can increase its longevity by 13 hours after being charged for only 15 minutes.

Additionally, the phone comes with a new 21MP rear shooter with an F/2.0 aperture and a 5MP front shooter. This is the exact same setup that is found on the Moto X Pure Edition, which was praised for being a huge step up in performance compared to the cameras found on previous Moto devices.

On the software front, the Droid Turbo 2 will be running on Android 5.1 Lollipop, and come with all the usual suite of Moto software like Moto Display and Moto Voice.

With the Droid Turbo 2, Motorola is also bringing over Moto Maker support to the lineup thereby allowing customers to customise the handset according to their liking before buying it. For a limited time, Verizon and Motorola will also allow owners of the 64GB variant of the Droid Turbo 2 to change the color of their device, if they are unhappy with their first choice.

The Droid Turbo 2 will be available on Verizon’s network from October 29 (i.e. this Thursday) at $26/30 per month.
