LG has just published their Q2 2013 financial results, and the company managed to squeeze out a meager $139 million in profit. Meh. The most impressive figure, however, is smartphone shipments: 12.1 million units. This is a new record for the company. Sadly, there’s no geographic breakdown of these sales, which is something I really want to see since I have a gut feeling that most of these smartphones were sold in Korea and other Asian countries. I can’t remember the last time I saw an LG phone in Finland or the UK or Germany.

Can the company make their brand stand for something? Sure, but it’s not going to be easy. Ask just about anyone covering the mobile industry what they think of LG and they’ll tell you that all they do is copy Samsung. From the look of their devices to their software skins, it’s just copy and paste, which leaves a bad taste in people’s mouths.

Ironically, LG makes a ton of components, so theoretically they should be able to leverage that to compete with Samsung much more aggressively, but that’s not happening.
