Rumor: The next version of Android isn’t going to be unveiled at I/O next month

Google has traditionally debuted new versions of Android during the winter time, along with a new Nexus phone, though last year they kind of didn’t do that. The company showed off Android 4.1 Jelly Bean during Google I/O 2012, alongside the Nexus 7 tablet. Then Android 4.2 came with the Nexus 4 in November, but would you really call 4.2 that big of an upgrade?

Geeks and mobile phone connoisseurs around the world are now waiting for the next “major” version of Android, which is rumored to be called “Key Lime Pie”. Many, myself included, suspected that we’d see KLP at Google I/O 2013, which takes place next month, but according to a new rumor from Gadgetronica, that’s no longer the case.

They say that Google has delayed KLP so that manufacturers can catch up and make sure their phones have Android 4.2.2 on their devices. While I don’t exactly buy this rumor, I wouldn’t be surprised if Google did indeed wait until the second half of the year to show off a new version of their mobile OS.

Think about it. We know there’s going to be new Motorola phones this year, that’s already been confirmed, so why not make them something truly special? If they’re the first phones to support Android 5.0, assuming that’s what KLP will be called, then those devices will get plenty of attention.

Of course, we don’t have to wait too long to find out if this rumor or bogus or not. The first day of I/O is exactly three weeks away. That’ll fly by in no time whatsoever.
