Google’s Chromecast dongle has been so popular since it made its debut that it is now the number one streaming device in the U.S., the company confirmed this week. In just 18 months, the device has been used to “cast” media to a TV more than 1 billion times.

Google CBO Omid Kordestani revealed the stats during the search giant’s earnings call on Thursday, when it also admitted for the first time that Nexus 6 supply issues were the reason behind its inability to meet such high demand.

Such supplies issues clearly haven’t affected the Chromecast, though. At just $35 — even less if you shop around — and with additional services adding cast support all the time, the device has become a major hit.

Since its launch, Chromecast usage per device has increased by around 60 percent, Google said. The company didn’t reveal exactly how many Chromecast units it had sold to date, but it did share numbers from analytics firm NPD, which confirm it is the number one streaming device in the U.S. — beating out competition from the likes of the Apple TV, Roku, and Amazon’s Fire TV.

This success means we’ll almost certainly get a Chromecast 2 at some point, but of course, Google didn’t mention when that might be. We’ve been expecting a new model for around six months now, but with the original still going strong, Google won’t be in a rush to replace it yet.
