DigiTimes: Big phones are killing demand for 7″ tablets, expect to see more 8″ tablets in 2014

Remember when Samsung announced the 4.3 inch Galaxy S II in 2011 and you thought to yourself that it was so big that no one in their right mind would buy it? Well look where we are now. Samsung’s flagship phone has a 5 inch screen, LG’s flagship phone has a 5.5 inch screen, and there are rumors saying the third generation Galaxy Note will have a 6 inch display. According to DigiTimes, this is scaring tablet makers.

The Taiwanese supply chain website is saying that companies are going to start focusing on making 8 inch tablets in 2014. Said tablets will have higher resolution panels with IPS technology, not the boring old TN stuff you see in bottom of the barrel devices.

Now it’s easy to point your finger at Apple and say that their 7.9 inch iPad mini somehow “forces” companies to make a product with a similarly sized screen, but I don’t agree with that. The first Android tablets that hit the market were basically iPad clones, and they failed, because why would anyone buy an iPad clone for $499 when they could buy the real thing instead? It was when companies like Samsung and HTC started making 7 inch and 7.7 inch tablets that the whole Android tablet scene blew up.

So with that, I look forward to 2014, especially with regards to higher pixel densities.
