Specs of the Samsung’s sub-$150 Galaxy Tab 3 Lite have leaked, and they’re quite terrible

There are quite a few number of ways to compete with companies that make the same sort of widgets you make, but the easiest and often most successful way to drive your nemesis into the ground is to engage in a battle over price. Several days ago, it was revealed that Samsung would be announcing a 100 Euro ($135) tablet at CES known as the “Galaxy Tab 3 Lite”. Thanks to something called a UAProf, which is a file that a company hosts on their servers to tell WAP sites how to format themselves, we now have a rough outline of this tablet’s specs.

Let’s start with the most disappointing one, the screen. That’s the most expensive component of any smartphone or tablet, and it’s sadly the first thing that companies look to optimize for cost. The Galaxy Tab 3 Lite will have a panel that only pushes 1024 x 600 pixels. Then there’s the processor, which is said to be an ARM Cortex A9 clocked at 1.2 GHz. No word on the number of cores, but I have a feeling it’s a Samsung part. And then finally, this device will ship with Android 4.2 installed.

Does this mean this tablet is dead on arrival? No. It will be sold in countries where saying “just add another $100 and get a Nexus 7” is the equivalent of saying “put in another 40 hours of work”. Consumers in India, China, Brazil, and other emerging markets, are highly price sensitive. So despite the fact that an infinitely better tablet is “just” an extra hundred dollars or so, that doesn’t matter.
