The curved AMOLED devices that Samsung is currently using on its flagship handsets have allowed it to make its devices stand out from the competition. While they offer very little benefit in terms of functionality, they do help in making a device more compact and also make it look unique.

Except for the Galaxy Note 7, Samsung has always launched two variants of its flagship devices in recent times. One of them comes with a curved screen, while the other one features a flat AMOLED panel. This way the company is able to cater to the tastes of customers who are not fond of the edge display.

Now, it looks like the Korean company is planning on switching to edge panels exclusively on its flagship devices.

“Samsung has considered that it would make the edge display as the identity of the Galaxy S smartphone lineup if the company can provide consumers differentiated user experience through software and user-friendly functions (for the curved screen),” said Koh Dong-jin, the head of the tech giant’s mobile business, in a media interview in New York last week.

Samsung has been continuously tweaking the radius of the curvature of the edge display since it first launched the Galaxy Note Edge in 2014. On the Galaxy Note 7, the edges are less curvier but more abrupt. Depending on how consumers react to it, the company will likely tweak it even further until it finds the right balance. While it is unlikely that Samsung would remove the flat variant of its flagship Galaxy S smartphone from its next year, it can definitely happen the year after that.

What are your thoughts on the curved display that Samsung uses on its flagship smartphones?
