According to a new report from The Korea Herald, Samsung will soon launch a USIM-enabled smartwatch known as the Gear Solo in the South Korean market. Local carrier SK Telecom will reportedly be the first to get this smartwatch. There’s no confirmation on whether it will remain a Korea exclusive, but reports peg the device to make its way to global markets as well.

Samsung is still silent on this particular smartwatch, but the company recently filed a patent for the Gear Solo moniker through the Korean Intellectual Property Office, thus confirming its existence. This device will allow users to communicate with people solely using their smartwatch, thus making it a smartphone replacement and not merely a companion accessory.

This has been done before on numerous occasions, but with bulky and somewhat unusable watches, so it will be interesting to see how Samsung makes the Gear Solo stand apart from the competition.

The Korea Herald also said that the company could change the name of the device before it launches, so the Gear Solo moniker might not stick for long.
