Hot on the heels of the Lollipop update for the Galaxy Note 3, Samsung has started rolling out the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Galaxy S4 in Russia as well. For now, the update is only being rolled out to the Exynos variant (I9500) of the handset.

Samsung is yet to update its recent flagship devices like the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Alpha to Lollipop, so it is pretty surprising that the Korean company is first rolling out the update for its previous generation devices.

The hefty 1049MB update bumps the Galaxy S4 to Android 5.0.1 and brings with it a number of other goodies, including revamped system apps, lockscreen notifications, and performance and stability improvements. Installing the update requires at least 3GB of free space with the system partition shrinking by a minimum of 950MB post the update.

In fact, the space constraints have also forced Samsung to remove some of the pre-loaded apps like Google Play, Books, Movies and others. You will have to manually download these apps back from the Google Play Store after the Lollipop update is installed on your device.

The update is being rolled out in a phased matter and will not be available to all Galaxy S4 owners in Russia at once. However, the roll out should be complete within the next two weeks.
