Qualcomm today announced its next-generation Spectra ISP featuring improved biometric authentication and high-resolution depth sensing. The new ISP will allow for smartphones to better perceive depth and is also suited for head mounted displays.

First, let’s talk about Qualcomm’s second generation Spectra ISP. It now features new hardware and software architecture for further advancements in computer vision, image quality, and power efficiency. It features multi-frame noise reduction, hardware-accelerated motion compensated temporal filtering, and inline EIS for excellent video recording quality.

There’s also Qualcomm’s new and improved Spectra Module which now features improved camera modules offering “superior biometric authentication, and structured light for a variety of computer vision applications that require real-time, dense depth map generation and segmentation.”

Translating all the mumbo jumbo above, Qualcomm’s new Spectra ISP and module will lead to faster and improved biometric authentication systems. It has also been expanded to include iris scanning recognition. The updated camera module is also capable of 3D depth sensing and processing all the data in real-time for improved performance.

The announcement from Qualcomm comes with the iPhone 8 launch just around the corner. Apple’s iPhone 8 is expected to debut with some amazing new AR features thanks to an array of depth-sensing sensors it will ship with. With today’s announcement, Qualcomm is essentially reassuring Android users that similar features and implementations will start making their way to Android devices from next year as well.
