Qualcomm today announced that it will be supporting the Tango platform on the Snapdragon 820, its current flagship chipset, as well as on all future Snapdragon 600 and 800 tier processors.

Google, Lenovo, and Qualcomm had teamed up to announce the first Tango-enabled smartphone earlier this month: the Lenovo Phab2 Pro that is powered by a Snapdragon 652 chipset.

Qualcomm notes in its press release that all Snapdragon 600 and Snapdragon 800 series chipset share the same “architectural advantages” required for Tango. This includes being able to process data from all five Tango-related sensors — gyroscope, accelerometer, and three camera sensors. The chipsets also feature a high-frequency clock that helps in performing accurate and uniform time stamping of all the sensor data.

The hardware is only one part of the equation here, as Qualcomm has also been able to easily deploy its portable Tango-specific software optimisation on the Snapdragon 820 and all future Snapdragon 600 and 800 series processors.

This move from Qualcomm should lead to more OEMs releasing more powerful Tango-enabled devices later this year. This also essentially means that you are unlikely to see any MediaTek or Exynos powered Tango device from any OEM anytime soon.
