Qualcomm Details Snapdragon 835’s Photo and Video Improvements

The first batch of Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 powered devices are not scheduled to arrive until April. So, to keep the buzz around its upcoming chipset alive, Qualcomm has detailed some key improvements that it has made with its latest chipset that will further improve the photos and videos you take with your phone.

Taking a cue from the iPhone 7 Plus, Qualcomm’s Spectra 180 ISP on the Snapdragon 835 chipset features Smooth Zoom that automatically combines data from optical and digital zoom to capture better photos when the zoomed function is used. The ISP supports one wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens and makes use of heterogeneous computing capabilities to achieve this.

Then, the Snapdragon 835 also features EIS 3.0 (Electronic Image Stabilisation) that has support for 4K videos along with gyro-based pitch, yaw, and roll correction for better and smoother zoom while recording videos.

The Spectra ISP on the Snapdragon 835 chipset also features Dual Photodiode (2PD) autofocus mechanism that allows for lightning fast autofocus speeds. The technology is similar to Samsung’s Dual Pixel in which every pixel of the camera sensor is now used for phase detection and image capture. Compared to the traditional autofocus systems, Dual Pixel and Dual Photodiode autofocus systems are faster and more accurate even in low-light conditions.

Lastly, Qualcomm highlights the Clear Sight technology on the Snapdragon 835 chipset that helps capture true-to-life colors. For videos, the company makes use of Perceptual Quantization in which the final video is improved by a smarter encoding process where more bits are assigned to parts of videos with higher visual perception.

While LG has passed on the Snapdragon 835 chipset this year for the G6, other OEMs like Samsung and HTC will use the chipset in their upcoming flagship handsets due to be launched in April.
