After initially debuting Google Assistant with the first generation Pixels in 2016, Google brought its digital assistant to more Marshmallow and higher running smartphones within a few months. Now, Google is further expanding Assistant’s reach by bringing it to smartphones and even Android tablets.

Google Assistant will now also be available for Android smartphones running Android 5.0 Lollipop. It would be rolled out to users in the U.S., UK, India, Australia, Canada, Singapore and other countries in the coming weeks.

In addition to older smartphones, Google is also bringing Assistant to Android tablets. The assistant would be rolled out in the coming week to Android tablets with the language set to English in the US. For tablets, Assistant rollout is limited to devices running Marshmallow or higher.

After a week or so, you can trigger Assistant on your Android device by long pressing the home button. When you first trigger Assistant, you will receive a prompt where you will have to opt-in.

Long pressing the home button right now on any non-Assistant device brings up the Screen Search option.

While Lollipop was released over three years ago by Google, it still continues to run on a fair share of Android devices especially in developing countries like India and Malaysia which is why Google is bringing it to such an old version of the OS.
