Cyanogen, Inc. has announced a new platform SDK that allows third-party developers to take advantage of CyanogenMod APIs, and contribute their own to be used by other applications. It’s available in alpha for now, and anyone can download it.
“Our hope is that this will help inspire the community to understand what’s possible and think up additional APIs that they can then add to CyanogenMod,” Cyanogen says in an announcement on its developer blog.
Cyanogen built its new SDK after attending the TreeHacks hackathon at Stanford University and deciding that it needed to improve the approachability of CyanogenMod. It’s designed to make it easier for developers to access key parts of the platform, and to contribute their own APIs.
The alpha SDK is being seeded with the Quick Settings Tile APK, which allows apps and services a quick settings tile that can be used to quickly toggle functions on an off, and to provide shortcuts to frequently used features.
Cyanogen points out, however, that because this is an alpha, developers can expect the SDK to change and improve dramatically over the coming weeks and months.
