Unlike microUSB, USB Type-C is a more advanced port that can not only accept power and data, but also display signals and more. Due to its advanced specs, USB Type-C cables are more complex than a normal microUSB cable, and since USB Type-C is a relatively new connector, there are many cables available on Amazon and other popular ecommerce sites that are non-compliant with the Type-C specs.

Even companies like OnePlus have released non-compliant USB Type-C cables that did not work properly with other devices having a USB Type-C port. A non-compliant USB Type-C cable can potentially lead to serious issues, including completely destroying your smartphone or tablet, as a Google engineer Benson Leung found out.

To make life easier for consumers, Amazon today announced that it will be banning the sale of any USB Type-C cable or adapter that is not compliant with the specs issued by the “USB Implementers Forum Inc.” This means that the next time you buy a USB Type-C cable or adapter from Amazon, be rest assured that it will work perfectly with all your USB Type-C devices just fine.

USB Type-C is soon going to become a commonplace in smartphones. Google already switched to the connector last year with the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X and the Chromebook Pixel, and LG and HTC are following suit by using a USB Type-C connector on their flagship devices of 2016.
