The long rumored Galaxy Tab 3 Lite has just been officially announced by Samsung. According to the Korean mega-conglomerate, the device’s key feature is the ability to last for eight hours while watching video. Curiously, the Tab 3 Lite has a 3,600 mAh battery, which isn’t that much bigger than the 3,200 mAh cell in the far smaller Galaxy Note 3. Speaking about size, this new tablet has a 7.0 inch display that pushes a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. Under the hood there’s a 1.2 GHz dual core processor, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, and if you opt for the 3G version, you’ll get a 21 megabit per second HSPA+ modem.

So now for the important question: How much does this thing cost?

That’s not in the press release, which shouldn’t be too surprising. This is Samsung, we’re used to this by now. The company says the Tab 3 Lite will be available globally, so it won’t be long until we start seeming some numbers from retailers such as BestBuy and Amazon.

Should you buy the Tab 3 Lite? I’m going to repeat what I’ve been saying about this device since the first leaks started appearing. If you’re ultra cost conscious and can’t pony up the $230 for a Nexus 7, then sure, this thing is perfect. Unlike the Amazon Kindle Fire, you’ll actually get Google’s suite of apps on this thing. And if you intend to use the Tab 3 Lite for video playback, then that microSD card slot will come in super handy.
