Earlier this year, Twitter released a new Vine app for iOS users. Vine allows Twitter users to share short videos of up to 6 seconds in length on the social networking website. While Vine’s popularity is arguable, the service had one major achilles heel – the lack of an Android app.

That changes from today, as Twitter has just announced the release of Vine for Android, nearly six months after the iOS app was made available. Thankfully, Twitter is rewarding Android users for their patience with a feature that is going to be unique to Vine for Android for sometime: zoom.

Sadly, the Vine app for Android is not perfectly in sync with its iOS counterpart, and lacks many basic features such as the ability to record a video using the front-facing camera, search, mentions, hashtags, and the ability to share to Facebook. Twitter, however, is promising frequent updates over the coming weeks that should put both the apps on par feature wise. The Vine app is available for all Android devices running Ice Cream Sandwich or higher.

Twitter also announced that Vine is now used by more than 13 million iOS users worldwide. Now, with the release of an Android app, Vine’s popularity should sky rocket, even if for a brief moment.
