Android KitKat

Beginning from today, Sony will start rolling out the Android 4.4 KitKat update for its last generation of Xperia devices — the Xperia Z, ZL, ZR and the Tablet Z. Apart from the latest version of Android, the update includes many other goodies like a revamped status bar and Quick Settings, with a UI that is similar to the one seen on the PlayStation 4.

Sony has also taken this opportunity to improve its system apps. The Messaging, Email and Camera app have all received minor UI adjustments along with some new animations, features and performance improvements. The Email app also includes a split screen mode now, which should please Tablet Z owners. The camera app includes all the effects and features we have seen on the Xperia Z2 and Z1 with support for additional plugins.

Sony’s Media suite of applications have also been updated with the Walkman, Movies and Album apps now featuring integration with Sony’s Entertainment Network cloud service. Other notable changes include a Battery Stamina mode for improving battery life, support for Xperia Themes and compatibility with the company’s latest wearables — the SmartBand SWR10.

As always, the software update is being rolled out in batches so it will not be available instantly on your Xperia device(s). If you are the owner of an Xperia T2 Ultra, E1 or the M2, you will need to wait for another month or so before Sony rolls out the KitKat update for your device.
