During its annual Technology Summit in Hawaii, Qualcomm has officially announced its newest flagship mobile processor.

The Snapdragon 855 is the real deal, as it was expected to be this week. Qualcomm has only briefly talked about its potential, not digging into the real breakdowns just yet when it compares to last year’s flagship processor, the Snapdragon 845. We do know the new processor can provide “up to three times the AI performance compared to the previous generation mobile platform”, but we don’t know how it fares when it comes to potentially improved overall performance, efficiency, or battery life.

We do know the Snapdragon 855 is based on the 7nm manufacturing process, though, slimming things down even further from the 10nm manufacturing process of the Snapdragon 845.

The new processor is built to handle the adoption of 5G mobile connections. It will likely be teaming up with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem, which is expected to debut with the upcoming and oft-rumored Samsung Galaxy S10. Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint have all confirmed they will be using a Samsung smartphone to welcome their own 5G networks into existence, all set to launch in early 2019.

At this point we don’t know much else about the incoming advanced processor, but Qualcomm should be diving into the details soon enough.
