At the Lenovo Tech World, Motorola has unveiled its flagship phone for 2016: the Moto Z. The phone is a completely brand new flagship series from the Lenovo-owned Moto and has little in common with previous Moto X handsets.

The Moto Z stands out due to its extremely slim profile. The unibody aluminium handset has a 5.2mm waistline that makes it he slimmest smartphones in the market right now. For comparison, the iPhone 6s is 7.1mm thick, while the Galaxy S7 is 7.9mm thick.

Despite its super-thin profile, the Moto Z packs in top notch internals. The handset sports a 5.5-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 820 chipset clocked at 2.15GHz, and 4GB RAM. It also features 32/64GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot. Due to its slim profile, the Moto Z packs in a mere 2600mAh battery, which is on the lower side. However, there is Tyrbo Charging support, so the handset will be at least able to charge quickly. Other key specs of the handset include a USB Type-C port, a fingerprint scanner on the front, Wi-Fi b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.2, and NFC. The handset lacks a 3.5mm audio jack, with the audio being routed through the USB Type-C port of the phone.

There is a 13MP f/1.8 aperture shooter at the rear of the phone that features OIS, PDAF, and laser autofocus, with the front of the phone housing a 5MP f/2.2 shooter with a wide-angle lens and large 1.4um pixels.

The rear of the Moto Z features 16 dots that allow Moto Mods to be connected to them. These Mods can be used to enhance the functionality of the phone. These ‘Mods’ snap to the back of the phone using magnets. Motorola showed off three different Mods at the event. The first one is an Insta-Share projector that turns your phone into a projector. It comes with its own built-in battery so as to not drain the battery of the handset. The second Mod is from JBL dubbed the SoundBoost. The speaker helps in improving the sound quality and audio experience from the phone, and it even comes with a built-in kickstand. Lastly, Motorola has teamed up with Incipio to create the offGRID Power Pack Mod that increases the battery life of the handset by an additional 22 hours.

The Moto Z will be available exclusively as the Moto Z Droid on the Verizon’s network in the United States this summer, while the unlocked version of the phone will be available worldwide from Setember along with Moto Mods.
