Google and Lenovo teamed up at CES 2018 to unveil the Smart Display. Powered by Google Assistant, the Smart Display is similar to Amazon’s Echo Show but runs on Google Assistant and other nifty features thrown in. It will be available in two display sizes: 8-inch and 10.1-inch.

Thanks to the display, Smart Display can be used to view maps, YouTube videos, Google Photos, video calls over Duo, and manage other smart home devices. The Lenovo Smart Display is powered by a Snapdragon 624 chipset, 2GB RAM, and 4GB of internal storage. It also features Bluetooth Low Energy, Wi-Fi ac, a 10W speaker with dual passive radiator, dual microphone arrays for voice tracking, and a 5MP front camera. Interestingly, for all privacy freaks, the front camera has a physical shutter so you can rest assured that it is not recording all your movement silently.

Imagine Mom waking up to a picture of her jampacked day full of meetings and errands with just a quick glance at her calendar on the large 8-inch or 10-inch screen of the Lenovo Smart Display. The Google Assistant can also read out her schedule and tell her the weather as she multi-tasks to get everyone out the door.  Ask the Google Assistant for traffic updates it will bring up Google Maps™ to show Mom the fastest morning commute. It also reminds her on her way out that it’s her colleague’s birthday, so she simply asks the Google Assistant on her Lenovo Smart Display to show the closest open bakery on Google Maps to pick up a birthday cake. To save Mom even more time, the Google Assistant on Lenovo Smart Display will be able to set up routines designed to help Mom when getting out the door in the morning, or returning home in the evening.

The 8-inch Smart Display features a 1280 x 800 resolution, while the larger 10.1-inch model features a resolution of 1920 x 1200. Lenovo will be making the Smart Display available in soft grey and natural bamboo colors so that its design matches your living room or kitchen depending on where you place it. The Smart Display can also be placed in a portrait orientation if you are short of space.

The Lenovo Smart Display will go on sale in early summer of 2018. The 8-inch model will cost $199.99, with the 10.1-inch model coming in at $249.99.

Smart speakers are going to be all the rage in 2018 and Google is ensuring that it covers all bases with the Lenovo Smart Display. Amazon already has a hefty lead over Google and Apple in the smart speaker category so Google has a lot of catching up to do here. While Assistant is superior to Alexa in many ways, it still lacks integration with as many third-party apps and services as Amazon’s virtual assistant does.
