Microsoft today announced Skype Lite, a watered-down version of its messaging and video calling app optimised for 2G connections and low-end Android smartphones. The 13MB app is available in 7 different languages and is optimised to ensure it consumes less data and resources.

Microsoft has also included a special data saver mode that can be enabled to save more data during video calls.

Built primarily for the Indian market, Microsoft has integrated Aadhaar with Skype Lite. This will allow one to verify themselves while on a video call, with the data being deleted once the call ends. This feature should particularly come in handy for enterprises for interviews conducted over video calls.

Other features of Skype Lite includes integration with SMS messages, spam message blocking, dark theme, chat bot integration, and localisation support.

Google and Amazon have recently been focusing on the Indian market to further fuel their growth. Like Skype Lite, Google’s video calling app Duo is also optimised to work on spotty 2G data connections. Similarly, Google recently released YouTube Go, a version of the YouTube app specifically for the Indian market that is better optimised to work on slow data network connections.
